I’m Joshua, a high school student living in Dallas, and this is my food blog, Bok Choy and Broccoli. I first started blogging near the end of middle school on a personal blog, Kuya’s Notebook. But after realizing I was sharing a lot of food pictures on there, I started Bok Choy and Broccoli with my mom, still the best cook in my life so far.

At the time, it sought to share vegetarian recipes that had an Asian flair to it, combining my vegetarianism at the time with my mom’s Filipino heritage and general love for Asian cuisine. I wanted to share recipes that would give a sense of who I was: American food with an Asian twist, Asian food with an American twist. Asian fusion. That’s why I picked the name “Bok Choy and Broccoli,” broccoli to represent my white, American side and bok choy for my Filipino, Asian side, all while making it clear that we’d be sharing vegetarian food.

Eventually, when I stopped being pescatarian (someone who doesn’t eat meat but eats fish), I decided to change the focus of the recipes on this blog, to move from focusing on the lack of meat and instead to focusing on food representing my heritage—meat or no meat.

So from my plate to yours, welcome to Bok Choy and Broccoli!
